Meat Ball, my childhood favorite
Meatball, I always feel that, somehow, it is the most expensive food in my life at the day I begin to buy or cook my own meal. Meatballs are using nice mince meat without bone, wit or without fat as a base ingredient, it is really expensive to buy a satisfied volume for my tummy when I was a student.
I love meatball, it is my favorite, in Asia, we have a lot of ways to eat them, not to mention the way we learn from the western cuisines like the meatball bolognese or the scotch egg. Meatball is the King of hot pot in Asia, I believe every hot pot shop you visit in Asia, no matter which, meatball is always on the menu, and it is also the famous one among the local, whether they are homemade or manufactured by the food industry, and of course, together with its cousin >>> Fish ball, crab ball, big octopus ball, and fried veggie ball. They are always top sell in the hot pot shop, especially the meatball, expensive yet delicious, AH! I can't stop my saliva rolling in my mouth when I am talking about the nice puffy meatball which is so elastic until you can feel with its bouncing with your every chew in your mouth, filling up every gap between the teeth and causing you to reach a toothpick and floss your teeth after meal, sort of a good friend to a teeth huh?
Alright, I am going to share one of my favorite meatball recipes at here, the sweet vinegar fried meatball, it is a simple recipe, and you can just do it at home with your simple skill and equipment. Finally, I hope you enjoy this.

Prep time: 20 min
Cook time: 20 min
Ready in: 40 min
Yields: 12 nos
Ingredients
- 200 grams / 7.1 ounces minced pork
- half tsp salt, add if needed
- one pinches fresh black pepper, ground
- 1 tsp Soy Sauce
- 1 tbsp cooking alcohol/ Cooking Sake
- 1 tbsp chopped ginger
- 1 tbsp chopped onion/ scallion
- 3/4 cup brunoise lotus root, or chopped
- 1/2 cup grated lotus root
- 1 tbsp corn starch
- a drizzle sesame oil
- cooking oil for fry
- 2 tbsp vinegar
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 1 tbsp soy sauce
- 1 tbsp sake
Sweet vinegar
Mix the minced pork and chopped ingredients.
Grated Lotus Root
- here is the Grated lotus root, but if you intend to cook a large quantity, then you could use the blender or something that can reduce it into a tiny flour like fragments.
- squeeze away the water if you don't want your meat too juicy:) especially if you blend it with machine
- Mix well all the ingredients after cooking oil. There are 2tbsp of vinegar, 1 tbsp of sugar, soy sauce, and sake / cooking alcohol. mix well and set aside, for the sauce
- Mix the ground beef with the salt, black pepper, soy sauce and sake, mix them well and taste. stir them well in the bowl until you feel the ground pork is sticky and firm.
- Add in the chopped ginger, onion, and lotus root (both grated and chopped), cornstarch, and sesame oil, after you feel the seasoned minced pork is sticky, then squeeze them nicely until all ingredients are combined.
- Gently shape them into a size of ping pong ball, then round them on your palm to shape it round, the meatball would not be sticky on your skin if you rubbed your hand with a layer of oil, easier for the work.
- Fry the meatballs in hot oil, about 170°C / 340°F, for 5 to six minutes until they are golden brown in color. Then remove them to a cool rack and set aside.
- Heat up a pan and bring the sweet vinegar to boil, which we mixed well at step 3, reduce a moment, then pour in the meatball and stir until the sauce is thickened, with a satisfied glaze coat on the meatballs.
- Remove the meatball from the pan and enjoy.

Meatball soup in Asia
As I mention before, I love meatball, and I will crazy with it, if it served with the soup, the clear soup, as my favorite meal is the soup. A harmony of healthy and unhealthy, the perfect combination, well, although I will always put them in my greasy high protein soup which always break down my nutrition balance. Once again, I am gonna show you some of the meatballs dishes at my place.
