Aside from snow and
onsens (hot springs), another one regular blessings that the Niseko zone has
been honored with, is the wealth of mineral drinking water springs.
The numerous meters of snow that cover the inclines of Mount Youtei each winter don't melt all away with the warm spring weather, a substantial part of it is drenched up by the mountain itself, percolating and filtering through the stone before blasting out of its base approximately 50 to 100 years in the wake of falling as precipitation.

24) 函館山【函館市】Hakodate Yama [ Hakodate].
The view is good even on gay light. |
One of Japan’s 3 great
night views of light and shadow. Christian churches, Western-style architecture, red-brick
warehouses… Hakodate city streets preserve remnants of European influence. Yet
the city wears a different “face” at night. In fact, the Hakodate nightscape
viewed from Hakodate-yama (Mount Hakodate) is so stunningly beautiful that it
has been honored as one of Japan’s three great night view sites, receiving the
highest rating of three stars in the Michelin Green Guide Japan. Just as
Hakodate city lights illuminate life along the edge of the bay, the exquisite
contrast of light and dark defines the Hakodate nightscape.
Mt. Hakodate is located
within striking distance of the city center. The ropeway is the standard way to
visit the mountain and will land you at the summit station in just three
minutes. When taking the ropeway up the mountain, try facing the back of the
car and looking out the right-hand window: from this position, you’ll get the
biggest thrill at the instant when the night view suddenly reveals itself. The
observatory on the mountain also features a souvenir shop and restaurants.
Evening near sunset —
the “miracle” moment.
The sun is at the edge. |
If you want to fully
appreciate the spectacular Hakodate nightscape, start ascending the mountain
shortly before sunset. Darkness slowly spreads across the face of the city, and
you can witness the progressive illumination of city lights. The best seasons
for night viewing are fall and winter, when the illuminated glow of the city is
even more beautiful in the cold, clear air.
Other than the night
view, you can also Experience the Changing Appeal of the Different Seasons. Highlights of the night view from Mt.
Hakodate change with the seasons. In the autumn, the days are often fine and
the air clear, offering visitors a sweeping panoramic view. In the winter, the
glow of the city lights is reflected off the whiter-than-white snow that
envelops the city, enhancing the dazzling night view. On foggy summer nights,
the mountain looks down on a mysteriously veiled panorama.
